At work and at home

At the labour market, women are underrepresented, underestimated and underpaid; at home men are. Gender inequality is reflected in the fact that women are more likely to be and remain unemployed, to work part time, to hold jobs below their skill level, and by an average gender pay gap of 15%. It is also evident in the every-day reality of running a household: women take up most of the work, even if both partners have a full time job, and are the ones who are held accountable by family and friends for a clean house, well-educated children, and healthy dinners.

This situation must be changed and gender based role patterns need to be eliminated. Only by recognising that two adults together have the responsibility at home, will the number of women entering the labour market be ameliorated. At work, employers needs to be encouraged by the state and the unions to develop real diversity policies, and discrimination against women must be fought by employers, employees, and expert institutions of the state.
